Gucci 90 x 90 project
Collaboration with Gucci on the 90 x 90 project, Yu Cai reinterprets five enduring themes—Flora, Fauna, Nautical, Equestrian, and the GG Monogram—as a contemporary tribute to Gucci’s silk legacy.
With refined artistry, she redefines the expressive possibilities of silk, bridging personal narratives with Gucci’s iconic codes. Each design expands the medium into new realms of visual and emotional resonance.
Artworks
Flora
90 x 90 project, Flora, by Yu Cai
The “Flora” design—one of @Gucci’s most iconic motifs—draws from the original composition inspired by Sandro Botticelli’s masterpieces for the Medici family, La Primavera (Spring) and The Birth of Venus (1470s–1480s). Yu Cai reimagines these classical elements through a vaporwave lens, restructuring them with soft hues of pink and blue to create a fresh, contemporary vision.
Fauna
90 x 90 project, Fauna, by Yu Cai
Yu Cai reimagines Gucci’s timeless elements within a world bathed in neon light and candy-colored hues. What first appears as a flat plane reveals layers of intricate detail across foreground, middle ground, and background. Bamboo, distant mountains, and ornamental rocks evoke the essence of traditional Chinese painting, while animals, each with a distinct expression, seem ready to leap into motion. Trees and flora drift softly in the mist, breathing life into the scene.
Equestrian
90 x 90 project, Equestrian, by Yu Cai
For Gucci’s Equestrian-themed silk, Yu Cai focuses on capturing the nuanced expressions and dynamic postures of horses. Inspired by the Northern Song Dynasty master Li Gonglin and his renowned painting Five Horses Chart, each horse is rendered with distinct eyes that convey individuality and spirit. The design is anchored in Gucci’s refined signature palette of red and green, bridging classical artistry with timeless brand codes.
90 x 90 project, Nautical, by Yu Cai
Milan, Italy
Nautical
The weathered anchor, the shards of glass, and the tattered paper carry the quiet weight of time, each fragment a testament to memory and endurance. In their transformation, they reflect Gucci’s heritage—where the passage of time does not diminish, but instead rekindles new light and brilliance.
GG Monogram
90 x 90 project, GG Monogram, by Yu Cai
Yu Cai gives a fresh, contemporary twist to Gucci’s classic logo motifs, transforming the iconic red and green into soft pastel pinks, blues, and greens.
